Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Associate's Degree in two years. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). The plan includes four semesters, each with an average course load of 15 units, and follows the Plan 1 General Education pattern. You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.
The Associate of Arts in Photography at Santa Ana College provides comprehensive training in industry-level digital photographic techniques. This program combines technical mastery with creative vision, critical thinking, and professional practices essential for success in the contemporary photography world. Students develop proficiency across multiple photographic genres including portrait, weddings, landscape, photojournalism, commercial, and fine art photography. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning with industry-standard equipment and software (including Adobe CC and Capture One). Students utilize their professional skill set to craft a portfolio of technically efficient photographs, demonstrating a personal vision. The coursework juxtaposes technical skill development with creativity, encouraging students to engage critically with photographic history and contemporary practices. Upon completion of this degree, students can enter the industry directly or consider transfer options to BA or BFA photography programs.
Produce properly exposed, technically competent digital photographs using manual camera settings in diverse lighting situations according to current industry standards.
Generate intentional, photographic content centered around a specific theme or topic and create a focused sequence of dynamic images.
Articulate and apply basic verbal (and/or written) critical analysis of photographic form, content and technique.
Demonstrate proficiency in contemporary digital photographic post-production, and image manipulation techniques, from camera, to computer, to printer using professional-level workflows and tools.
Create a robust portfolio demonstrating photographic technique and a personal vision in preparation for entry into the workforce or transfer to a 4-year institution.
Apply contemporary professional camera lenses and industry-standard lighting equipment to diverse photographic projects in studio settings and on location.
