A.S. Degree: Fire Administration Option

Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Associate's Degree in two years. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). The plan includes four semesters, each with an average course load of 15 units, and follows the Plan 1 General Education pattern. You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

The degree program in fire administration is designed to prepare students for careers as fire service officers. The program meets requirements of the California State Board of Fire Services Certified Company Officer and college or university preparation. Transcript evaluation may allow up to a maximum of 18 units of credit for previous fire service education. If Fire Technology 121 is completed as an elective with a “C” or better grade and FTC 121L is completed with a "pass," it may be used to satisfy the requirements of section F of the general education requirements for graduation.

Student must complete the general education requirements as outlined in the appropriate catalog.

Introduces psychology and behavioral science majors to descriptive and inferential statistical methods. An overview of human sexuality through a psychological lens with additional focus on biological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives and influences. This course examines the theoretical foundations of communication in organizational settings. Students will explore key models, concepts, and theories of organizational communication, analyze communication dynamics within different organizational structures, and develop an understanding of the role communication plays in organizational culture, leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Through a multidisciplinary approach, an examination of the impact of cultural, societal, and ethical issues facing the social work and human services field will frame how target populations are served. Through a social justice lens, special attention is given to the evolution of current service delivery systems, their policies and procedures, and the tasks of culturally responsive social workers within those settings.

Historical development of institutions, ideas, social transformations, cultural movements, liberation politics, and sexual and gender diversity in the U.S. will be studied. This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Global Studies, including the history of globalization, and economic, political, social, cultural and ecological developments related to the process of globalization.
This course introduces students to the origins, current status, and future trends of major transnational issues confronting the global community. Topics can include population trends, economic development and inequality, basic human needs (for food, water, health care), human rights, international conflict and security concerns, and environmental problems. The course also focuses on global governance, including the study of collective global responsibilities.
Introduces students to important issues related to cultural diversity in the field of psychology. Major areas of psychology will be explored from a multicultural perspective, including research, mental health, social psychology, and identity development. Exploration of historically underrepresented populations in the U.S. will be emphasized.
An overview of human sexuality through a psychological lens with additional focus on biological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives and influences. Topics to be explored will include, but will not be limited to, the following: sexual anatomy and physiological arousal; sexual attitudes and values; sexual behaviors, dysfunction, disorders and treatments; relationships and communication; interconnections to cultural identities (e.g., race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc.); sexual violence; contraception and pregnancy; and sexually transmitted infections and prevention. This course surveys various psychological research methods with an emphasis on research design, experimental procedures, descriptive methods, instrumentation, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research data. Research design and methodology will be examined through a review of research in a variety of the sub-disciplines of psychology. In laboratory sessions students will conduct experimental and non-experimental research in a variety of areas of psychology. Actual data collected from research conducted during laboratory sessions will be analyzed with statistical software.
The aim of this course will be to explore psychoactive drugs and their impact on behavior, cognition, neural communication, and physiology. Psychotherapeutic drugs and recreational drugs will be covered. Core concepts include the structure and function of the nervous system, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of drugs. There will be specific emphasis on the treatment of psychological disorders, addiction, cognitive enhancement, and the impact of learning and memory. This course uses a biopsychosocial model to examine the history and use of psychopharmacology for treatment of mental disorders and includes the study of neurobiology and mechanisms of action of the major psychotropic drugs. The role of gender, culture, age, and other variables on the indication and use of medications is examined.

This course provides students with a basic knowledge of the human resources requirements related to the roles and responsibilities of a Chief Fire Officer. Topics include developing plans for providing employee accommodation, developing hiring procedures, establishing personnel assignments, describing methods of facilitating and encouraging professional development, developing an ongoing education training program, developing promotion procedures, developing proposals for improving employee benefits, and developing a measurable accident and injury prevention program. This course provides students with a basic knowledge of the emergency service requirements related to the roles and responsibilities of a Chief Fire Officer including developing a plan for the integration of fire services resources, developing an agency resource contingency plan, evaluating incident facilities, supervising multiple resources, developing and utilizing an incident action plan, obtaining incident information to facilitate transfer of command, developing and conducting a post-incident analysis, and maintaining incident records. This course is designed for the certified Company Officer advancing to the Chief Fire Officer classification. Additional materials fees may be required.

This combined lecture and lab course is designed for majors within the biological sciences and pre-health profession field. This course is an investigation on the fundamental concepts of biology that include but are not limited to the following: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell biology, biological molecules, membrane dynamics, homeostasis, cell communication and reproduction, metabolism including cellular respiration and photosynthesis, molecular genetics, molecular genetics, and biotechnology. This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the entry level professional instructor to perform his or her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications. At the end of this course, candidates for Instructor I certification will be able to teach and deliver instruction from a prepared lesson plan utilizing instructional aids and evaluation instruments. The Instructor I will also be able to adapt a lesson plan and complete the reporting requirements to the local jurisdiction. This digital design course emphasizes critical examination of basic principles and elements of design in computer graphics. Students will not only produce designs, but examine the physiology and psychology behind fundamental elements of design, investigate their use in culture, as well as practice and reflect on how graphics, scale, and space can impact humans through visual design features and functions. Special focus on design for media applications, creative visual storytelling for digital applications.
This course examines global issues related to internet culture, web ethics, equity, social justice, in addition to rights and trends related to the web. An introduction to the notation and fundamental theoretical elements of Western music, demonstrated through a variety of styles, covering: pitch and rhythm concepts and structures, basic formal elements, and fundamental musicianship. Development of skills in handwritten notation is expected. In addition, interpreting music, written and aurally, with regard to its broad historical and cultural context will be covered, and critiquing different musical genres and styles in order to make aesthetic judgments about them by applying criteria from the knowledge and principles of music theory learned in class.

Emphasis will be placed on the chronological examination of various musical theatre productions.
