Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Associate's Degree in two years. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). The plan includes four semesters, each with an average course load of 15 units, and follows the Plan 1 General Education pattern. You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

The associate degree curriculum in English is designed to develop proficiency in written communication and in the understanding of human nature through the study of language and literature.  Completion of the A.A. degree in English prepares students to pursue upper-division studies as an English major focusing on literature, writing, criticism or other related fields. Students wanting to pursue a career in law, politics, education, or communications often choose the A.A. degree in English because of the emphasis on close reading of texts, strategic employment of language, and strengthened writing skills the program promotes. Because the critical thinking and analytical skills developed as an English major are so versatile, students who may not be sure of their career and/or academic goals might want to consider it.

A trans-disciplinary, multisectoral, and multidimensional approach will be employed to study Asian Americans' various experiences and their contributions to American society and culture utilizing the perspectives of race, nationality, class, gender, and sexuality. The course will cover historical and contemporary issues within Asian American communities, including immigration, anti-Asian violence, labor, unionization, and stereotypes.
This course is an introduction to the field of African/Black American Studies. A trans-disciplinary, multisectoral, and multidimensional approach will be employed to study African/Black Americans' various experiences and contributions to American society and culture. The course will cover historical and contemporary issues, including African origins, the development of African/Black American culture, the struggles of the African/Black American family, African/Black American political life, and African/Black American people's socioeconomic empowerment in the United States.

This course examines the theoretical foundations of communication in organizational settings. Students will explore key models, concepts, and theories of organizational communication, analyze communication dynamics within different organizational structures, and develop an understanding of the role communication plays in organizational culture, leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Students focus on the theoretical perspectives such as systems theory, social information processing theory, and the communication ecology approach.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, an examination of the impact of cultural, societal, and ethical issues facing the social work and human services field will frame how target populations are served. This course explores LGBTQ+ history in the United States from the colonial era to the recent past. Historical development of institutions, ideas, social transformations, cultural movements, liberation politics, and sexual and gender diversity in the U.S. will be studied. Students will work with scholarly texts and a variety of primary documents, honing historical analysis, critical thinking, and writing skills.

Women's experiences will be analyzed in a national/international context.
This course provides an introduction to the health inequities in the United States that stem from unequal living conditions. Students will explore how education, socioeconomic status, racism and gender shape health epidemics and policy development. The basic skills necessary for advocating for health and social justice will be theoretically demonstrated.

This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Global Studies, including the history of globalization, and economic, political, social, cultural and ecological developments related to the process of globalization.
This course introduces students to the origins, current status, and future trends of major transnational issues confronting the global community. Topics can include population trends, economic development and inequality, basic human needs (for food, water, health care), human rights, international conflict and security concerns, and environmental problems. The course also focuses on global governance, including the study of collective global responsibilities.
Introduces students to important issues related to cultural diversity in the field of psychology. Major areas of psychology will be explored from a multicultural perspective, including research, mental health, social psychology, and identity development. Exploration of historically underrepresented populations in the U.S. will be emphasized.
An overview of human sexuality through a psychological lens with additional focus on biological, sociocultural, and historical perspectives and influences. Topics to be explored will include, but will not be limited to, the following: sexual anatomy and physiological arousal; sexual attitudes and values; sexual behaviors, dysfunction, disorders and treatments; relationships and communication; interconnections to cultural identities (e.g., race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc.); sexual violence; contraception and pregnancy; and sexually transmitted infections and prevention. Current sex norms and various aspects of interpersonal and individual sexual adjustment will also be discussed. (No credit if a student has taken IDS 155).
This course surveys various psychological research methods with an emphasis on research design, experimental procedures, descriptive methods, instrumentation, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research data. Research design and methodology will be examined through a review of research in a variety of the sub-disciplines of psychology. In laboratory sessions students will conduct experimental and non-experimental research in a variety of areas of psychology. Actual data collected from research conducted during laboratory sessions will be analyzed with statistical software.
The aim of this course will be to explore psychoactive drugs and their impact on behavior, cognition, neural communication, and physiology. Psychotherapeutic drugs and recreational drugs will be covered. Core concepts include the structure and function of the nervous system, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of drugs. There will be specific emphasis on the treatment of psychological disorders, addiction, cognitive enhancement, and the impact of learning and memory. This course uses a biopsychosocial model to examine the history and use of psychopharmacology for treatment of mental disorders and includes the study of neurobiology and mechanisms of action of the major psychotropic drugs. The role of gender, culture, age, and other variables on the indication and use of medications is examined.
This course is designed to help students better understand cognitive science. Topics include cognitive neuroscience, perception, memory, learning, attention, language, creativity, and problem-solving. Current perspectives as it relates to thought in humans and non-humans will also be covered.

This course focuses on the application of sociological theories and concepts to the study of race, ethnicity, and racism within an intersectional context. It includes an examination of the cultural, political, historical, and economic practices and institutions that construct, perpetuate, or challenge racism, racialized inequalities, and interactive dynamics within and between various racial and ethnic groups. Special attention will be extended to the impacts of globalization, immigration, miscegenation, identity formation, and strategies to combat and decrease prejudice and discrimination.
The Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies offers an intersectional examination of issues related to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer experience. Taught from the sociological perspective, this course includes historical and contemporary analyses of the LGBTQ+ community and their relationship to social institutions, and institutional power. The Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies also surveys political, legal, and cultural values and actions with a focus on social justice. Field trips may be required. (Same as WMNS 286)
