Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Certificate in a timely manner. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

The certificate curriculum in engine service is designed to prepare students as engine service helpers and apprentices. Course content includes engine diagnostic skills, measurement, engine tear-down, and assembly. Timing belts/chains, variable cam timing, turbochargers, blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, camshafts, and other engine components are covered. The program will enable those already employed in the field to upgrade their skills in engine maintenance, rebuilding, and service.

Explain engine maintenance requirements for modern gasoline engines.

First Semester

Introduction to Automotive
Introduction to the primary automotive systems used on modern vehicles. Theory, parts nomenclature, and description of system operation are emphasized. This course is intended for students seeking technical knowledge, with hands-on lab work, and future employment as an automotive service technician.
    AUTO 105
    Automotive Workplace Skills
    This course is designed to provide students with the foundational skills needed to succeed in the automotive service industry. Emphasis will be placed on mastering the three C’s methods (Concern, Cause, and Correction) for diagnosing and documenting repairs, as well as developing proficiency in basic English technical writing and communication. Students will also gain the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with service writers, customers, and other team members. Additionally, students will become familiar with industry tools and technology, including computers and diagnostic software, and will be expected to meet dealerships, independent shops, and BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) compliance standards. This course will require field trips.
      AUTO 111
      Engine Repair
      This course deals with the teardown, measurement, reassembly, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline automotive engines. Accurate measurement of engine components and hands-on training of engine repair skills are emphasized. Students must bring approved safety glasses to the automotive lab. This course assists the student in preparation for the A1 (Engine Repair) ASE certification exam. Field trips may be required.

      Second Semester

      Light Vehicle Diesel Engines
      This course will introduce the applications of modern light duty diesel engines. American and German engine systems will be covered, including common rail fuel injection, turbochargers, and diesel emission systems. Field trips may be required.
        AUTO 211
        High Performance Engines
        This is an advanced course in automotive engine design and high-performance engine preparation. Complete disassembly and reassembly of engines will be accomplished. The use of precision measuring instruments, aftermarket specialty tools, and engine blueprinting techniques will be emphasized. Field trips may be required.
