A.A. Degree: Child Development - Emphasis in Expanded Learning and Recreation

Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Associate's Degree in two years. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). The plan includes four semesters, each with an average course load of 15 units, and follows the Plan 1 General Education pattern. You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

The Associate in Arts in Child Development - Emphasis in Expanded Learning and Recreation is designed to prepare students to serve as instructional aides/paraprofessional staff members in an elementary school setting and/or lead staff in an expanded learning before/after school program. Students are offered knowledge about the development of the school age child and the role of the adult in helping to integrate skills and aid classroom learning.

Demonstrate knowledge of early childhood curriculum, program practices, and the development of young children.

Design, implement, and assess developmentally appropriate expanded learning and recreation programs that promote positive youth development, equity, and lifelong learning in diverse community settings.

Develop effective leadership, communication, and collaboration skills to engage families, schools, and community partners in creating inclusive and responsive learning environments beyond the traditional classroom.

Analyze and apply relevant theories, research, and evidence-based practices in expanded learning, recreation, and youth services to support the academic, social, and emotional growth of participants.
