The Expanded Learning and Recreation Program Leader Certificate is intended to provide students with skills necessary to work with TK-12 students in an expanded learning setting, provide tutoring or homework assistance, or assist in academic enrichment programs.

Demonstrate the advanced skills necessary to work with students in an expanded learning and recreation program that includes knowledge of academic support/enrichment and activity programming.

Careers in Teaching
Introduction to the teaching profession, cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and neuro-diverse student populations, career ladders and options, academic preparation, experience, credentials required for employment, utilizing career assessments, principles of goal setting, and exposure to teaching environments and teaching professionals. Students will formulate a career objective and develop an educational plan. (Same as Child Development 114).

    Child Growth and Development
    Students examine the progression of development in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains and identify developmental milestones for children from conception through adolescence. Emphasis is on interactions between biological processes, environmental, and cultural factors. Students may engage in various methods of observing children's development to evaluate individual differences and analyze development characteristics at various stages according to developmental theories.       The processes of socialization focusing on the interrelationship of family, school, and community. Examines the influence of multiple societal contexts. Explores the role of collaboration between family, community, and schools in supporting children's development, birth through adolescence. (Same as APCD 110)

        Introduction to Children with Disabilities or Delays
        Introduces the variations in development of children and adolescents with disabilities or delay. Includes an overview of historical and societal influences, laws relating to individuals with disabilities or delays, and the assessment and referral process. Emphasizes the importance of working in partnership with families and specialists to support children's development. (Same as EDUC 203)

          Second Semester

          Tutoring Reading in Elementary Schools
          An examination of effective tutoring strategies focusing on supporting reading skills of elementary-age children. Students will independently complete a minimum of twenty hours of service learning (tutoring of TK-8th students in home and/or school settings) in addition to lecture hours.

            Development of the School-Age Child (DS5)
            An examination of the physical, cognitive, personality, and social development of children between the ages of five and twelve years. Attention will be paid to the scientific study of middle childhood, developmental trends, and diversity issues. Not offered every semester. (Same as EDUC 120A)

              School-Age Child Care and Recreation Activities (DS5)
              This course will focus on school-age creative activities, including planning and implementing an appropriate before/after school curriculum. Attention will be paid to integrating academics, recreation, and creative activities suitable for school-age child care programs. (Same as EDUC 120B)
