Certificate of Achievement (Transcripted): Support for Students with Disabilities or Delays

Below is a sample academic plan that shows you how you can complete your Certificate in a timely manner. Your path may look different depending on your circumstances?for example, if you attend part-time, choose to take Intersession or Summer courses, or have earned prior credit (Credit for Prior Learning, Dual Enrollment, Transfer Credit). You are required to meet with a counselor to set up a comprehensive education plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

The Support for Students with Disabilities or Delays Certificate is designed to prepare students with knowledge, skills, and resources to address the diverse needs of children and adolescents with disabilities or delays. Students are offered intervention strategies, adaptive curriculum, and tools to both support and empower educators and families in both natural and/or inclusive education settings.

Demonstrate analysis and knowledge of the personal and team roles and responsibilities of the special education provider in the public school which includes diagnosis and implementation strategies for students with disabilities or delays.

Comprehensive Education Plan: You are required to meet with a counselor for a comprehensive educational plan that is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals. Please schedule an appointment with a counselor in your first semester.

First Semester

Introduction to Children with Disabilities or Delays
Introduces the variations in development of children and adolescents with disabilities or delay. Includes an overview of historical and societal influences, laws relating to individuals with disabilities or delays, and the assessment and referral process. Emphasizes the importance of working in partnership with families and specialists to support children's development. (Same as EDUC 203)

    Curriculum and Intervention Strategies for Children with Disabilities or Delays
    This covers curriculum and intervention strategies for working with children with disabilities or delays in partnership with their families. Focuses on the use of observation and assessment in meeting the individualized needs of children in inclusive and natural environments. Includes the role of the teacher as a professional working with families, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and cultural competence.

    Supporting and Empowering Families of Children with Special Needs
    This course will provide teachers, intervention assistants, administrators, and parents with the tools necessary to support and empower families of children with disabilities and other special needs in early childhood and school-age programs. Techniques, strategies, and resources will be provided to support children in a natural and/or inclusive educational setting and to help guide parents to be advocates of their children.
